Endemism in recently diverged angiosperms is associated with polyploidy

چکیده

Abstract Endemic (range restricted or precinctive) plant species are frequently observed to exhibit polyploidy (chromosome set duplication), which can drive shifts in ecology for angiosperms, but whether endemism is generally associated with throughout the flowering plants has not been determined. We tested hypothesis that more frequent and pronounced (higher evident ploidy levels) recently evolved endemic angiosperms. Chromosome count data, molecular dating distribution 4210 (representing all major clades of angiosperms including largest families) were mined from literature-based databases. Upper boundary regression was used investigate relationship between maximum number chromosomes time since taxon divergence, across separately families, comparing non-endemic species. A significant negative exponential age ( R 2 adj = 0.48 species, 0.49 endemics; 0.44 non-endemics; p always < 0.0001), recent endemics demonstrating greater chromosome numbers y intercept 164 cf. 111) declining rapidly (decay constant 0.12, 0.04) respect non-endemics. The majority families exhibited this relationship, a steeper slope Campanulaceae, Asteraceae, Fabaceae, Poaceae, Caryophyllaceae Rosaceae, duplication extensive particularly young endemics, supporting as key explanation range restriction. However, may also be diploid, an exclusive driver endemism.

Polyploidy and sexual system in angiosperms: Is there an association?

PREMISE OF THE STUDY Flowering plants display a variety of sexual systems, ranging from complete cosexuality (hermaphroditism) to separate-sexed individuals (dioecy). While dioecy is relatively rare, it has evolved many times and is present in many plant families. Transitions in sexual systems are hypothesized to be affected by large genomic events such as whole-genome duplication, or polyploid...

Functional conservation between CRABS CLAW orthologues from widely diverged angiosperms.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS CRABS CLAW (CRC) encodes a transcription factor of the YABBY family that plays important roles in carpel and nectary development in Arabidopsis thaliana. Combined evolutionary and developmental studies suggest an ancestor of the CRC gene to have controlled carpel development in the last common ancestor of the angiosperms. Roles for CRC orthologues in leaf development and car...

Multiple reproductive barriers separate recently diverged sunflower ecotypes.

Measuring reproductive barriers between groups of organisms is an effective way to determine the traits and mechanisms that impede gene flow. However, to understand the ecological and evolutionary factors that drive speciation, it is important to distinguish between the barriers that arise early in the speciation process and those that arise after speciation is largely complete. In this article...

The latent promiscuity of newly identified microbial lactonases is linked to a recently diverged phosphotriesterase.

In essence, evolutionary processes occur gradually, while maintaining fitness throughout. Along this line, it has been proposed that the ability of a progenitor to promiscuously catalyze a low level of the evolving activity could facilitate the divergence of a new function by providing an immediate selective advantage. To directly establish a role for promiscuity in the divergence of natural en...

Is Life Expectancy Associated with Depression in the Elderly?

Introduction: Depression is one of the most common psychiatric disorders and risk factors for suicide in aging that often underdiagnosed and those who are more hopeful, suffer from less depression. The present study was conducted to determine the relationship between life expectancy and depression among older people in Yazd, Iran.   Methods: This descriptive cross-sectional study was con...
